Our Esteemed Founder & CEO - Alex Stamos
HOW MY JOURNEY BEGAN:
My name is Alex Stamos, and I’m the managing director of Feel Good Massage Chairs. My story is one of hard work, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of a vision that many doubted—including my own father.
Growing up in a family of seven, I left school in the tenth-year to help my father in the fruit markets. From the age of 17, I worked tirelessly—lifting heavy boxes, unloading trucks by hand, and pushing my body to its limits. Over time, the physical toll led to serious injuries, including bludgeoned discs in my lower back. The pain was unbearable, and I was desperate for relief.
I tried everything—massages, chiropractors, anything that might ease the pain. But massages were expensive, and getting appointments were always challenging. The days I couldn’t get in to see a masseuse were agonizing, and I knew I needed a better solution.
I was in Sydney, visiting Darling Harbour, when I stumbled upon something that would change my life forever: a vending massage chair. For just two dollars, I experienced a fleeting moment of relief. It was the best money I had ever spent. The next day, I returned to that chair, eager to feel that sweet relief again. That was when the idea sparked—why couldn’t this be available to everyone, whenever they needed it? This is where Feel Good Massage Chairs came to life!
I began researching massage chairs, discovering that they were virtually unknown in Australia. There was just that one chair in Sydney. Determined to bring this relief to others, I called the number on the chair and connected with a man in Taiwan who was looking for someone to introduce these chairs to Australia.
After long discussions, I decided to take the plunge. In 1996, I imported a container of vending massage chairs to Melbourne. Soon after, I secured contracts with Westfield shopping centers and placed the chairs in Southland and Doncaster shopping centers in Melbourne. When I told my father and friends, they laughed. To them, it was a joke, a ridiculous idea that would never take off. But I was determined. People loved the chairs, and soon, I started getting calls from customers asking if they could buy them for their homes.
That’s when I realised I could take massage chairs to the next level. With my manager, I flew to Japan to test the Fujitsu and Inada massage chairs, then traveled to Taiwan where the vending chairs were made. I selected a variety of massage chairs to bring back to Adelaide, determined to provide Australians with the relief they needed.
In 1997, I opened my first retail shop on King Street in West Melbourne. But awareness was low, and business was tough. People didn’t know what massage chairs were, so I invested heavily in advertising. It wasn’t until I began doing exhibitions that things began to change. By getting people to sit in the chairs and experience them firsthand, I was able to educate them and show them the benefits.
Today, 27 years later, Feel Good Massage Chairs is a thriving business. We have over 500 vending locations across Australia, including shopping centers, corporate offices, and airports. The company I started out of a personal need for relief is now helping countless Australians find theirs. For over 27 years, I have researched and found the best quality massage chairs, from 2D all the way to 4D, and have built Feel Good to offer the best warranty, delivery options, and the best customer service you will ever come across.
As the managing director and CEO, I’m still passionate about bringing comfort and health to our communities. Feel Good Massage Chairs remains a family-owned business, committed to providing ultimate service. We were the first in Australia to introduce massage chairs, to educate the public, and to lead the way. Others may have followed, but we were the pioneers—and we’re still here, helping Australians feel good every day.

First Generation: The Birth of Massage Chairs (1954)
In the 1950s, a period marked by significant transformation in Japan, Nobuo Fujimoto emerged as a pioneer in massage chair technology. Drawing on his insights from traditional public baths, where scrub brushes provided a form of relaxation, Fujimoto sought to mechanize this experience. In 1954, he unveiled the FUJIIRYOKI Automatic Massage Machine, an innovative creation that combined traditional relaxation techniques with mechanical engineering. His design utilised rolling massage balls and a side handle to simulate the kneading motions of a manual massage, offering a novel and automated approach to relaxation. This early model marked a significant departure from manual massage methods, laying the groundwork for future advancements in the massage chair industry and establishing a foundation for ongoing technological development.
The History of the Massage Chair
The concept of massage chairs originated in Japan during the 1950s when inventors developed a clever pulley system that connected a roller to a plank. By turning a handle, the roller moved up and down, providing a rudimentary yet effective massage. This inventive solution, akin to the simple act of scratching one's own back, was a novel approach at the time. The mechanism was soon adapted for use with wooden chairs, enabling people to enjoy a new form of back massage by simply sitting and letting the rollers do their work.
The World’s First Massage chair
In 1954, shortly after the war, FUJIIRYOKI’s founder Nobuo Fujimoto gathered materials like wood, balls, and chains to create prototypes, leading to the birth of the world’s first mass-produced massage chair. The FUJIIRYOKI Automatic Massage Machine featured a simple “knead” function, moving massage balls up and down with a side handle. This innovative design revolutionised traditional massage methods, making “machine massage” accessible and setting the stage for modern massage chairs, which now support health and wellness globally.
Second Generation: 2D and 3D Innovation (1979-1980)
By the late 1970s, Japan was at the forefront of technological innovation, which began to significantly influence everyday products, including massage chairs. During this transformative period, the introduction of the Dr. Roller FP-401 marked a pivotal advancement. Unlike its predecessors, this second-generation chair utilised an advanced "roller-type" system that enabled simultaneous massage of both sides of the spine, greatly improving the consistency and thoroughness of the massage experience. With the incorporation of basic motors, the FP-401 introduced programmable features, such as customisable backrest adjustments and preset massage routines. Additionally, this era saw the advent of 3D technology, which allowed rollers to move in and out, thus offering a deeper and more versatile massage experience. This innovation marked a significant evolution from earlier mechanical systems, setting a new standard in the massage chair industry.
The First 2D Massage Chair
In 1979-1980, the introduction of the Dr. Roller FP-401 marked the debut of the first 2D massage chair. This "roller-type" chair was designed to massage both sides of the spine simultaneously using rolling massage balls. The technology, which had initially supported only basic “knead” and “tap” functions, evolved significantly with this model. It also introduced the ability to freely recline the backrest, adding a new level of comfort and adjustability. This 2D massage chair represented a major leap forward, enhancing the massage experience and setting a new benchmark in the industry.
The First 3D Massage Chair
The CYBER-RELAX Massage Chair AS-001, introduced with its pioneering "Brain" technology, represented a significant advancement in massage chair innovation. This chair featured the industry’s first 3D point navigation system, which detected the unique contours of an individual's back muscles and automatically selected the most effective massage program. By adapting the massage to fit each person’s specific needs, the CYBER-RELAX AS-001 offered a highly personalised and responsive massage experience, setting a new standard in customisable comfort and technology.
Third Generation: The 4D Revolution (2000s-Present)
Entering the 2000s, massage chair technology experienced a groundbreaking transformation with the emergence of 4D models. This new generation marked a substantial departure from earlier designs by integrating four-dimensional technology, which enabled a sophisticated combination of rolling, kneading, tapping, and stretching movements. Unlike previous chairs that operated within fixed parameters, 4D massage chairs introduced a dynamic approach with adjustable intensity, depth, and multi-directional motions. This innovation aimed to more closely emulate the intricacies of human touch, offering a highly personalised and immersive massage experience. The 4D revolution set a new standard in comfort and therapeutic efficacy, pushing the boundaries of what was previously possible and redefining the massage chair experience.
4D Massage Chair
4D massage chairs represent a revolutionary leap from earlier models. Previously, massage rollers moved along fixed tracks, similar to a roller coaster, offering limited movement and depth. With the advent of 4D technology, this approach has evolved significantly. Now, massage rollers can push in and out of the track, adjusting the penetration depth of the massage. This advancement allows for a much more customisable experience, catering to individual needs with precision.
Whereas earlier 2D and 3D chairs provided basic, linear massage functions, 4D chairs introduce a new dimension. They adapt dynamically to user preferences, offering everything from deep, penetrating massages to gentle, enveloping strokes. This means that users can now tailor their massage experience more precisely than ever before, illustrating how far the technology has come since its simpler beginnings.
